Our Mission, Programs and Shelter Partners

Boston Share Network (BSN) is a non-profit organization consisting of a coalition of volunteers, shelters and agencies working together to bridge the gap between homelessness and a life of hope by:

  • assessing the immediate and ongoing needs of the homeless and poor people in the Boston area
  • responding to those needs by collecting tangible items and by raising funds to administer BSN programs
  • fostering the sharing of resources and information among shelters
  • advocating for change in policies at the state and federal levels by engaging individuals, groups, and governmental bodies in its efforts

Established Programs

Homeless and poor people do not have extra money on hand to cover the cost of several transactions that can change their lives for the better:

  • In order to prove who you are, you need a state-issued ID card.  Once you have one, you can apply for a job, cash a check, sign a lease, open a bank account, etc.  Without one you can do none of those things.  So BSN started the "You Are SomeBody" ID Program which provides the $25 fee required by the Registry of Motor Vehicles to get a Massachusetts ID card.
  • When you're living in a shelter, you still need to get to important commitments like medical appointments, job interviews, court appearances, new jobs, meetings with probation officers, and family-related visits.  So BSN started the Transportation Program that enables clients to use Charlie cards or use other forms of public transportation in and around Boston.
  • When a person is finally ready to move out of the shelter into housing, they don't have the money to pay for a moving van or truck and a couple of people to transport furniture from a furniture bank to their new place.  Without it they have to sleep on the floor.  So BSN started the Moving Assistance Program which pays a moving company up to $300 for clients who need that help.
